Since 1985,
White Water Associates, Inc., has provided analytical laboratory services, ecological
survey, wetland studies, resource planning and management, and environmental education. In
1998, the firm celebrates service milestones and significant certifications.
In June, the White Water Associates laboratory
conducted its 10,000th job. These lab analyses include drinking water, groundwater
monitoring at landfills and industrial sites, industrial effluent testing, and waste
characterization. The labs sophisticated information management system tracks each
sample received through every phase of analysis and reporting. "From humble
beginnings, we are proud to have reached this service milestone," says Dr. Bette
Premo, White Waters CEO. "We work hard in this very competitive market to
obtain new customers and hold them with good service."
This year, White Waters laboratory participated in a special program
for small business labs sponsored by the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence
(AFCEE). The program is designed to provide technical assistance and training to
laboratories that want to conduct Air Force work. The rigorous AFCEE program audits all
aspects of a laboratorys operation including sample management and tracking,
laboratory methods, equipment, personnel, quality control and quality assurance, and data
reporting. In June, White Waters lab successfully passed AFCEE requirements and is
now prepared for Air Force analytical laboratory work. Earlier in 1998, White Waters
lab was validated to conduct work on Army Corps of Engineers projects. White Water
Associates continues its certifications to conduct analyses for drinking water by
Michigans Department of Environmental Quality and for environmental samples by
Wisconsins Department of Natural Resources.
White Water was re-certified by Michigan Department of Transportation as a
woman business enterprise (WBE) and expanded its certification to Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Dr. Premo is confident about the overall benefits of this certification. "We are
competitive in the open market, but we believe that the WBE status places us in a
strategic position to obtain certain federal contracts that require WBE
participation," Premo says.
