"Tracks At Your Doorstep" Expands Classroom Bounds

|
A Forest Park sixth grader describes animal gaits and
track patterns to younger students (Sandy Knoll Elementary School, Marquette, MI) at one
of a series of interactive exhibits created by him and his fellow students.

White Water Associates, Inc., is helping students track mammals through a program designed
by firm members Dr. Elizabeth Rogers and David Tiller. The program entitled "Tracks
At Your Doorstep" is supported through a $10,000 Toyota Tapestry Grant that grant
writers Rogers, Tiller, and fifth-grade teacher Maxine Henry secured for the Forest Park
Elementary School, Crystal Falls, Michigan. Contributing its technical expertise, the firm
has led field trips, held classroom exercises, and facilitated student-delivered
presentations to other schools and local organizations.During winter, students don
snowshoes and, with the help of adult volunteers, find tracks in areas within Crystal
Falls and identify them from among three dozen species potentially occurring there,
including moose and gray wolf.
The program and its participants are described at Henry's homepage: http://www.up.net/~mahenry |
